Lithuim Ion Batteries, Best Choice for Cordless Power Tools

Lithium Ion batteries are the latest battery technology to be applied to cordless power tools. Although more expensive then tools with standard NiMh or NiCad batteries, Lithium Ion powered tools offer distinct advantages such as increased battery life and shorter charging times.

Lithium Ion batteries, mostly referred to as Li-ion, have many qualities that make them ideal for use in power tools. The 1st advantage is power density. Li-ion batteries provide about twice the amount of power as other rechargeable batteries in the same amount of space. This gives tool manufacturers a lot of options when designing these products. You can get a smaller, lighter tool that has the same power as the clunky NiMh or NiCad powered tools.

I recently purchased a Makita 18v cordless drill for use in my shop. It's smaller and lighter but just as powerful as my old heavier NiCad drill, if not more so. Last week I went to a friends house to help him install some cabinets. He had to change his battery twice while I was still working on the same charge!

I think the most important advantage of Li-ion batteries is that they have no memory effect. Simply put, memory effect refers to a battery accepting less charge than expected. NiCad batteries are the most impacted by this "memory effect" although NiMh batteries can also experience this condition. Memory effect can be minimized if you closely follow the manufacturers charging instructions.

With Li-ion batteries, you don't have to make sure the battery is fully dead before you charge it. You can top off the charge anytime without worrying about reduced performance of the battery. It's just one less thing to worry about.

Ever gone into your garage to get a drill for a quick job and find out the battery is dead? Instead of finishing that quick job you either had to wait for the battery to charge or, heaven forbid, use a screw driver! Li-ion batteries hold their charge very well when not in use. I went after my Milwaukee sawzall the other day to cut off a piece of pipe I needed for a project. The battery had not been used or charged for several weeks but it still had plenty of juice for the task.

Remember the performance qualities of the Lithium Ion battery the next time you're in the market for a new cordless tool. I'm sure you will appreciate the lighter, more powerful longer lasting Li-ion batteries a great improvement over your previous battery technology.

You can find a large selection of Lithium Ion powered cordless tools, like the Makita 18Volt Drill Driver at www.NewTools4You.com, the tools you need for less. You will also get free shipping on all orders over $99.
